All:
This is another that really "hits
home"....as I'm sure it does to many of you....Sam, Sparky, Frank Hicks
etc. Not too many of us "old farts" left who were "around" back then.
Many stories to tell about this Warrior....flying and social. I was
fortunate enough to know Lillian, his first wife. What a perfect jewel
and Lady!. She knew exactly "what she had" in Doug. What a wonderful
couple. I loved and admired them both.
He was one-of-kind and I enjoyed his
leadership, company and "counseling" immensely. He could chew your ass
one minute and be having a drink at the club, all forgotten, then
"telling" you how to "make out with the USO girls performing on stage"!
Those of us who knew him, served with him and for him, were fortunate
indeed to have had the experience. What a Guy! I believe he and Harold
Bonney....for those of you who knew Hal (another of my favorite
mentors)....flew in the 38th BG in the Pacific.
Hail and Farewell Doug. You have left an
indelible mark on my memory and I won't forget it. Thank you for your
friendship and guidance. God Bless and Keep you and Tail Winds till we
meet again. I look forward to seeing you.
V.O.,
Ursch
