Subject: Sad News
It is my sad duty to advise you that Betty Lou (Hawk) Miller passed away early this morning. She suffered a stroke several months ago and has been in a care facility since then. Betty Lou (she has gone by Elizabeth in recent years) was 80 years old. We went to high school together and married in 1953 the day after I was graduated from the Naval Academy. We spent our Air Force career together and were divorced in 1987 remaning friends. We have one son , George (David) Miller who is a district court judge in Colorado Springs. Dave was with her holding her hand when she died. Betty Lou will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a yet unspecified date. God rest her soul.

Gentlemen, With great sadness I pass this message of the loss of one of the greats in the strategic reconnaissance community. Squadron Leader John Crampton flew some of the most dangerous reconnaissance missions of the Cold War era in USAF RB-45C aircraft from RAF Sculthorpe. I corresponded with John and he graciously provided input to my book I Always Wanted to Fly, which includes his own story, the story of Colonel Hal Austin's overflight of the USSR, as well as the critical role played by Colonel Hack Mixson overseeing this joint USAF/RAF reconnaissance effort. Hack Mixson in the early '60s was my Wing Commander at Forbes AFB, Kansas - we then flew the RB-47H. From there he moved into the U-2 community. I know that both Hack and John have joined that select fraternity of aviators in the sky who faced their foe and triumphed. May their flights always be smooth and their whiskey from the best barrel.
With great respect - Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, Colonel, USAF (Ret.), 55SRW 1962-67

Wolf, We have lost one of the Greats of Strategic Reconnaissance, Squadron Leader John Crampton, who commanded those RAF Special Duty Flights with RB-45Cs in 1952 and 1954.
God Bless, Frank

Sir,
I’m the 45th RS Historian, and as of this ‘Tales’, I’m a new member of the 55th Wing Association. I had a question regarding the website. Is it possible to post a request for stories or anecdotes from former Cobra Ball/Combat Sent/Open Skies/Constant Phoenix crewmembers? I’m attempting to build a combination fact-sheet and trivia pamphlet for new squadron members, and I’d like to add as many good war stories as possible to share with the new crews.
If my request can be placed online, please let me know what you would need from me. My information is below, and my cell phone # is 402-709-2799. Thank you for your time.
V/R,
Devin

I just received your association newsletter in the mail addressed to Emily Clancy.
Emily Clancy passed away in Topeka, KS on March 7, 2010. Emily was the wife of CMS James J. Clancy, who was in the 55th in the late 50's-early 60's.

Hi All,
Our friend, Brian Schuett is having to endure a set back this past week, when his wife Shirley suffered a stroke. She was only 52, and sadly did not survive.
Spoke with him last night, and needless to say he's a bit worn slick by this all...He is presently in Lincoln, NE for her memorial and funeral and looks to return to Colorado this next week.
Phone calls may be a bit much right now with all that's going on for him, but thought maybe we could flood his mail box with some cards to let him know his friends are thinking of him.
His address is: 3949 Mallard Drive, Highlands Ranch, CO 80126
Hug your loved ones a bit harder today....

subject:    Memorial Gardens aerial view
Here's an aerial view (using Bing maps) of the Memorial Gardens at the NMUSAF. Although the picture is more than a year old (because it doesn't show the 319th BW monument in it, altho I annotated about where it is) the rest of it is fairly recent and gives you an idea of where the monuments are in relation to one another.
