Subject: Date of Passing Major Wesley Witten
Hello,
My father was in this wing in the early 1950's. The 38th and 338th. I saw your list of Comrades Remembered and for this reason I am submitting his name and my info. Our names are the same so there is not a typo.
I would like to locate any of the men who flew with him. He is listed in Bruce Bailey's book twice. They goofed up the spelling of his name, but the AFSN was right. At the first of Bailey's book where he copied some of the original orders, my father is listed in those orders. Dad graduated in the first SR class as I understand it.
He was in Biloxi after finishing the radar school he went through the instructors school. Rather than teach he remained active flight status in Strategic Reconnaissance. He received an Air Force medal for Military Merit in 1950 with his name engraved in it. This was shortly after the activation of the wing as I understand it.
Do you know any of the older hands who were around in these first graduating classes? I would enjoy talking to them and possibly meeting some of the crewmen he flew with. I believe he started out in RB-50's. He did tell me that they flew just about everything. He taught me a parachute landing fall when I was five, 1958. I used to jump off the roof while screaming Geronimo!!! It was on TV ......
