Gary Nelson reports the death of Dick Blomberg. Gary notes that "In the
55th at Offutt, 1967-68, he flew with Buzz McCoid's crew - Wayne Dauber, CP,
Mike Butchko, 2nd pilot, Joe Battaglia Nav 1, Herschel Crump Nav 2 , Dick was
R1, Gary Nelson was R2 and Garry Percival was R3."
RICHARD THEODORE BLOMBERG, JR. "OUR HERO" Passed away on May 12, 2007 in
Hemet, California at the age of 86.
He was born in San Francisco, California.
Richard married the love of his life, Mary Russell, on July 3, 1943 in San
Antonio, Texas. He was honored to celebrate 63 years of marriage.
Richard proudly
served his country in the United States Air Force for 30 years. He held the rank
of Lieutenant Colonel and served in World War II, Korean War, Cold War, and
the Vietnam War. During World War II, Richard was missing in action and became a
prisoner of war in Germany for 9 months. Throughout his career in the Air
Force, he was highly decorated for his outstanding service to his country.
Several of his commendations are: Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Prisoner of
War Medal, and the Purple Heart. Richard retired from the United States Air
Force on July 17, 1972.
He moved to Hemet in 1969 and was an active member of
the community for 38 years. He owned and operated O'Malley's Bike Shop from
1971 to 1978. He spent much of his time playing golf and was a member of the Echo
Hills Men's Golf Club. Richard was a life time member of the Disabled
Veterans of America and Veterans of Foreign Affairs.
He is survived by his wife, Mary
Margaret Blomberg of Hemet, California; sons, Russell (Jean) of Danville,
California, Richard III (Lauren) of Hemet, California; daughter, Pamela LeVardi
of Livermore, California; sister, Jocelyn Freed of Los Angeles,California; four
grandchildren, Laurie Gizer of Irvine, Ryan Blomberg (Arianna) of San Diego,
Sarah Tolson of San Ramon and Heather LeVardi of Livermore; two
great-grandchildren, Justan and Derin Gizer of Irvine; niece, Cindy (Steve) Giesregen of Los
Angeles; great-nephews, Christian Foster of El Segundo, California, Ryan
Giesregen of Los Angeles, California; great-niece, Jocelyn Foster of Los Angeles,
California; also very close to his heart is his beloved dog, Chi Chi.
Visitation will be held Friday,May 18, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. at McWane
Family Funeral Home, 350 North San Jacinto Street, Hemet, California, 92543.
Services will follow at 1:45 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren
Blvd., Riverside, California.
