Subject: Death of Col. Dan Birmingham

Additionally but not mentioned in the obituary Dan was a recipient of the
Distinguished Flying Cross for an action unknown to me. The only explanation
he gave my grandfather and grand-aunts at the time was that it was for
"something that happened over Russia". Burial I am told will be at
Arlington.

DANIEL J. BIRMINGHAM, 76, of the Toms River section of DOVER TOWNSHIP,
passed away Friday, Nov. 3, at home. Born in New Brunswick, he lived in
Alaska Greenland, Md., before moving to Toms River 26 years ago. He received
his bachelor of science degree in philosophy from St. Mary's in Baltimore.
Also, he received his master's degree in computer science from Fairleigh
Dickinson. He served in the U.S. Air Force during Korea, Vietnam, and the
Cold War. Mr. Birmingham's final assignments were commander of the Air Force
personnel assigned to NSA, Ft. Meade, Md., and the Commander of Sondrestrom
A.B. Greenland, Md. He served in the Air Force for 26 years, retiring in
1980. After retiring, he was a software developer and tester with AT&T and
Lucent in Holmdel for 16 years, retiring in 1980.

Surviving are his beloved wife of over 50 years, Tracy Klinger Birmingham.
He was the loving father to Mark Birmingham of Toms River, Cathy
Birmingham-Smithline and her husband Doug of Toms River; and dear brother to
William of High Pt., N.C., and Robert of Freehold.

Family will receive friends from 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Timothy E.
Ryan Home for Funerals, 995 Fischer Blvd., Toms River. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Justin's Roman Catholic
Church, Toms River. Committal will be private. Condolences may be sent to
