922nd SR

"922nd RS"
"922nd STRATEGIC SQUADRON"

According to Maj Greg Ogeltree's feature article in "The Trading Post", Spring 1995, pages 33 - 54, the emblem for the 922nd was approved on 23 October 1980 with the official description as follows: On a blue disc edged with a narrow yellow border, the neck and head of an eagle, with detailed black, in perspective with yellow beak and eye, black pupil wearing a brown headset highlighted white and detailed black, the neck surmounted in base by a light blue globe, rimmed and gridlined black with yellow areas; issuing from the eagle's eye two yellow lighting bolts palewise extending over the globe, outlined in black. attached above the disc a yellow scroll (bearing the unit designation). Motto: Attached below the disc a yellow scroll inscribed UNITED FOR PEACE in black letters. Unfortunately, the significance of elements used in the design was not recorded. This shows one version of the 922nd Strategic Squadron patch in a 4" size. I do have a subdued version in 3" as well.

The 922nd was located at Hellenikon AB, Athens, Greece since 1 July 1978 before being relocated to Souda Bay, Crete in 1990. In 1992 the 922nd SS moved to RAF Mildenhall, UK and was redesignated as "Reconnaissance Squadron". On 30 June 1994, the unit was inactivated and a day later, on 1 July 1994 activated as the 95th Reconnaissance Squadron. While the 922nd SS at Hellenikon was assigned to SAC's 7th Air Division, Ramstein AB, Germany, it came under the 55th Wing while being at RAF Mildenhall. Today, the 95th RS at RAF Mildenhall reports to the 55th Wing at Offutt AFB.
