MEMO FOR RECORD
Offutt Cemetery Flag Pole
In August, BGen Craig Koziol, 55th Wing Commander, noted that there was no flag on the Offutt Cemetery even though the plot has been there since the Ft Crook cavalry days. He asked Wing Command ChiefMSgt Robert Muthard to see if that could be rectified.
Chief Muthard then contacted Col (Ret) Mike Cook, president of the local Air Force Association chapter (and a member of the 55th SRW Assn Board of Directors), to inquire if the organization would take on the project of procuring a flag pole (and flag) for that purpose. Col Cook readily accepted the task, and subsequently offered the 55th SRW Association the opportunity to participate jointly in the project. Col (Ret) Jim Thomas, president of the 55SRWA, gladly accepted one more occasion to make a positive contribution to the 55th Wing.
On 28 August via e-mail, Pres Thomas gave details of the project and sought approval from the Board of Directors. The consent from the Directors was unanimous in endorsing the project.
The flag pole and flag were purchased, and in coordination with 55CES, the construction of the base-site, to include lighting, semi-circular keystone wall, and flag pole erection were completed in short order. The flag has been flying for a few weeks. As of 27 September, the project was completed, except for a pedestal, which CE will construct, and to which a dedication plaque will be attached, the wording of which was approved by BGen Koziol
The Associations share of the cost is $807.50 for the flag, pole and installation, and $190.50 for the bronze plaque with shipping. Total: $998.
Veterans Day, November 11 2005, has been set for a formal dedication of the flag, pole and plaque. Col (BGensel) Jonathan George, the recently installed 55th Wing Commander, has consented to be the officiating officer and speaker.
Respectfully submitted,
